What is a Canada eTA?
A Canadian electronic travel authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for many visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. It is electronically linked to your passport. An eTA is not a work or study permit and does not guarantee entry.
Who needs one?
Eligibility depends on nationality, travel document, immigration status and how you travel. Many visa-exempt travellers flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport need an eTA. Certain visa-required travellers may also qualify if they meet additional conditions.
Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, and Canadian permanent residents follow different document rules. US citizens and lawful US permanent residents are generally exempt from the eTA requirement. Rules differ for travel by land or sea, with specific exceptions. Always check the official eligibility guidance for your journey.
Before you apply
Have the following ready, and use the same passport for your application and your journey.
- The valid passport you will use to travel.
- An email address you can access.
- A payment method accepted by the official application service.
- Accurate personal, travel and background information.
- Any additional documents requested by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
Know what your authorisation allows
An eTA does not give you permission to work or study in Canada. A border services officer determines whether you may enter and how long you may stay. Travellers normally visit for up to 6 months, but a different period may be authorised.
Fees and processing, explained
Government fee: CAN$7. Official application fee. Private service fees are separate.
Many applicants receive an eTA within minutes, but some applications take several days if additional documents or checks are needed. Apply before booking your flight. There is no guaranteed approval time.
ETA Atlas service pricing is not yet set. We do not accept payments on this website. Any future service fee must be shown separately from government fees, with a full total before you pay.
Your direct option: You do not need to use a private service. Apply on the official government website and pay only the government charges that apply to you.
