What is a New Zealand NZeTA?
A New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) allows eligible travellers to travel to New Zealand. It is not a visa and does not guarantee entry. Depending on your journey, you may need a visitor NZeTA, a transit NZeTA or a different visa.
Who needs one?
Many travellers from visa-waiver countries need an NZeTA before visiting New Zealand. It is also relevant to certain transit travellers and cruise passengers. The requirements depend on your passport, immigration status, travel route and purpose.
New Zealand citizens and Australian citizens do not need an NZeTA. Australian permanent residents generally do need one, but may be exempt from the visitor levy. Visa holders and other groups have different requirements. Check Immigration New Zealand for your exact circumstances.
Before you apply
Have the following ready, and use the same passport for your application and your journey.
- A valid passport that meets New Zealand’s passport requirements.
- An accessible email address and a suitable face photo.
- A payment method for the NZeTA and any applicable visitor levy.
- Accurate identity, travel and eligibility information.
- Evidence of onward travel and sufficient funds if required for entry.
Know what your authorisation allows
For eligible visitors, stays are usually up to 3 months, or up to 6 months for eligible UK passport holders. You can visit for no more than 6 months in any 12-month period under these visitor conditions. Your permitted stay depends on entry permission and the rules that apply to you. An NZeTA is not permission to work in New Zealand.
Fees and processing, explained
Government fee: NZ$17 / NZ$23. App NZ$17 · online NZ$23. Plus NZ$100 IVL where applicable.
Where the IVL applies, the total official charges are NZ$117 using the app or NZ$123 online. The app and online routes have different NZeTA fees. Exemptions from the levy apply to some travellers.
Immigration New Zealand advises allowing 72 hours for an NZeTA. Some requests can take longer if further investigation is needed. Private providers cannot guarantee approval or a faster government decision.
